The Manchester Interdisciplinary Biocentre played host once again last night to the third presentation in the MIMIT Seminar Series.
Prof Jöns Hilborn’s discussion of the regeneration of bone using off-the-shelf injectables was an illuminating experience for the numerous attendees of the seminar. As Professor and Research Coordinator for Polymer Chemistry at Uppsala University, Prof Hilborn drew on his knowledge to talk about the in-vivo homing of stem cells, in turn illustrating the potential rewards of a mutually beneficial relationship between medicine and engineering.
The work carried out at Uppsala University under Prof Jöns Hilborn aims to design various functional structures and, ultimately, biomaterials based on biological recognition. “Not only should we be able to control macromolecular assemblies of synthetic materials but also bring the control from synthetic to living matter”, states Prof Hilborn.
The research profile within the Polymer Chemistry laboratory at Uppsala University and through collaborations includes synthesis, assembly for controlled structured materials and evaluation of functional properties.
