MIME student Konrad Dorling highlights first year success

The MSc in Interdisciplinary Medicine & Engineering (MIME) was developed a year ago by the then nascent MIMIT as a response to the increasing national demand for graduates equipped with the knowledge and skills to apply interdisciplinary medicine/engineering approaches to the development of novel therapies for healthcare.MIME

Konrad Dorling, 23, was one of the first students studying under MIME. His experience as part of Dr Peter Gardner’s study group allowed him to learn more about the clinical aspect of the course:

“Studying on the MIME course has enabled me to apply the skills I learnt in my undergraduate MPhys degree to a new and innovative environment” he explains. “I studied medical engineering modules in the second and third year of my MPhys, which gave me a great opportunity to see engineering at work in medicine. The MIME course was something that allowed me to build on this foundation and put my own specialized knowledge to good use”.

Dr Gardner’s MIMIT pump-funded project “Spectroscopic Grading for Biopsies” has allowed Konrad to foster his appreciation of technology in medicine:

“It’s such a unique course, and it gives you the opportunity to look at areas that haven’t necessarily been looked at in depth. As a student you have a chance to really push ahead with new advances and to make a difference”.
