Macro to Micro

School of MACE, University of ManchesterCoinciding with Prof Julian Goldman's visit, MIMIT™'s tour of MACE was an ideal opportunity for both Prof Goldman (CIMIT) and the MIMIT™ team to learn more about the capabilities of the University's engineers. The commonality between the large-scale engineering research at MACE and the medical field was widely commented upon; it was discovered that the workshops in the School of MACE (Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering), for example, offer untapped potential for materials testing.

The team also visited the £35million MIB building and its interdisciplinary laboratories. Peter Fielden, Site Miner, is based here and emphasised the clinical relevance of the work carried out in these labs - clinicians could take advantage of the unique, £300k anaerobic glove box technology to work with oxygen-sensitive enzymes, for example; or carry out microbial testing.

The Mass Spectrometer in the laboratory of Dr Matt Baker & his team certainly provided a talking point; Dr Baker's research seeks to discoverDr Baker Demonstrates the Mass Spectrometer a novel process for staging disease based upon the molecular characteristics of cancer stem cells, and his team's work with Mass Spectrometry is an extremely relevant area for MIMIT™'s Site Miners.

The tour demonstrated just a handful of the resources available in developing new technologies; and provides an interesting catalyst for future collaboration.
