New Scientific Director for MIMIT
MIMIT's new Scientific Director, Professor Sandra Downes, is a world renowned biomaterial scientist and is
Professor of Biomaterials in the University of Manchester. She has held a number of prestigious positions including Director of Research in Smith and Nephew plc. (a FTSE 100 Company), for seven years. Prior to this appointment Sandra was Professor of Biomaterials at Nottingham University in Biomaterials and before that she pioneered the IRC in Biomedical Materials at UCL (London). Sandra is also Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (FAIMBE), Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (FIMMM) as well as being a Chartered Engineer (CEng). She will be working closely with MIMIT's
Director and Scientific
Site Miners to develop and exploit potential solutions to clinical needs.
Sandra takes over the role from Professor Simon Gaskell, Vice-President for Research and Director of the Michael Barber Centre for Mass Spectrometry, who is to leave the University in October 2009 to become Principal of Queen Mary, University of London.
