Primary: Mechanisms of microbial pathogenesis by human pathogens that cause diarrhea (Giardia and Cryptosporidium), dysentery (Entamoeba), malaria (Plasmodium), vaginitis (Trichomonas), birth defects (Toxoplasma), and blindness (Acanthamoeba). The focus of the work is on cyst and oocyst walls of these parasites and on glycobiology including lectins, sugar polymers, and glycoproteins.

Secondary: public health interest is in use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers to prevent transmission of Giardia, Entamoeba, Cryptosporidium, Toxoplasma, and Acanthamoeba.
